Assura Derwentside GP Provider Company (GPCo) is a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) between local GPs and Assura, covering 14 Derwentside GP Practices. This partnership aims to deliver integrated care and enhanced clinical services in the community.

It was set up in Autumn 2007 in response to meeting government and local requirements to utilise community settings to their maximum in order to deliver a range of healthcare options which have in some cases been centralised in large acute hospitals.

This has meant inconvenience in relation to travel and access for some patients. Another key aim is to look at who delivers the services and to design pathways of care which may be more appropriately managed by community clinicians such as GPs, GPs with Special Interests, Optometrists, Pharmacists and specialist nurses.

Where necessary, training, supervision and support would be given by Consultant Medical staff from acute centres.
